About Marie Puddu
Stephen King said that if you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write.
If you can read between the lines, you’ll know that he is not only referring to writing, but to other forms of communication as well.
To be an effective or successful writer (or talker), you have to have something WORTHWHILE or INTERESTING to say. The beauty of this concept is that the worthiness or interest of something you are communicating always rests on the judgment of your audience. You may worry yourself to death or not. You may die trying to please other people or tell them to f— off. It’s really what and how you communicate.
Given that you do know how to please people, without compromising your own pleasure, all writers agree that above all these, you have to be coherent. Being talented in the language is a gift. It may be genetic, it may be something that just grew in you. For me, it worked both ways. For some reason, my “self” would lead “me” to things that would enhance and refine my intellect. I cannot tell how — I’ve always been self-made since I was a little child. Word would always spread in school, at work, or anywhere that I could create highly readable stuff.
I have this idea that I would never write anything until I turn 45 (twenty years from now). That is when I’ve “read” a great deal about life. That is when I’ve learned so much and knew what is important to communicate. Actually that is when I probably would have all the time in the world to write. Because honestly, twenty five is too damn young to know everything and appear like a big expert. When I’m older, I’d be wiser. I would have had more experiences, good or bad. I would have no little kids to worry about. I would have more time to devote to my avocation.
Then, when I look back, I was five when my kindergarten teacher told my mom to let me skip pre-school and jump straight to first grade, since I was the best in the class. I was eight when I first wrote for our elementary newspaper, ten when I became an editor. I remember coming home one day from school carrying a big box of cookies, a set of pen and paper, and a pretty good cash having won first place in an essay writing contest. Since then the confidence in me grew. Since then I knew this is what I wanted to do.
So many achievements for a very young girl. Whether other people recognized it or not, it could not be hidden. I have other talents, of course. I could recite the Greek alphabet (?!). I wish I could wait for twenty more years. But my brain wouldn’t. I just wanted to write. Writing has been my second skin. It has lived with me through the bad days. It has helped me connect to God too.
If there is a perfect time to communicate, it is now.
